Becoming Herself- A Child’s First Haircut Story

There’s something unforgettable about a child’s first real haircut — not the quick snips to even things out, but the moment they sit tall in the chair and start to see themselves differently. For Izzy and me, that moment was both tender and transformative.

Almost three, announcing her first “real bob.” Sometimes, becoming starts with a sentence this small.

After years behind the chair, I’ve witnessed countless first cuts — parents blinking back tears, toddlers gripping stuffed animals, the nervous energy before the first snip. But sitting across from my own daughter changed everything I thought I knew.

I wanted her first haircut to feel calm and exciting all at once. We chose a quiet afternoon when she was rested, fed, and curious. She carried her favorite stuffed bunny, and I explained each sound — the mist of water, the soft rhythm of the shears, the way the mirror shows you becoming.

In the Chair | June 2017

From curious giggles to a confident grin — the moments that turned a milestone into memory.

As stylists, we know children mirror our calm. The chair becomes a stage for trust — the more relaxed we are, the more they open up. I showed her how the scissors worked by snipping a ribbon first. Her giggle broke the tension instantly. By the time the first section fell, she was glowing — proud, brave, and utterly herself.

When she turned toward the mirror, her face changed. There it was — that spark of pride, the awareness of something new. It wasn’t just a haircut. It was her first lesson in change — and mine in letting go.

Whether you’re a parent preparing for this milestone or a stylist guiding someone through it, a child’s first haircut is always a rite of passage. A small chair, a big moment, and the beginning of becoming who they are.

The hug, the laughter, the quiet glow of growing up — one of the most meaningful transformations I’ve ever witnessed behind the chair.
